This music lesson got real crazy after an argument about Justin Bieber, which led to the whole class jamming on the star’s song “Love Yourself”. The young teacher was telling the class about deceptive cadences in music and a student challenged to give an example in popular music that uses the technique.
The teacher then told her students that even trendy pop icon Justin Bieber uses the technique, prompting students to demand a demonstration. Clearly not one to shy from a challenge, when a student brings a guitar to the front of the class, the teacher steps up and sings Justin’s hit “Love Yourself”, which brings the whole class onboard with the performance, as you can see below.
Another student beatboxes, providing a full arrangement for the impromptu performance while the teacher does an amazing job singing the famous soul hit. The fun and lively nature of the in-class jam clearly connected with music lovers online, as the clip has been viewed a huge 35 million times.
The teacher in the clip is Victoria Volz (also known as Victoria Fatu) and the video is hosted on her YouTube channel Vicky and Brandon. Unsurprisingly, the Justin Bieber jam is her most popular upload, although she’s also had several other viral videos. Her second most popular video shows Victoria and her six-year-old daughter Sophie singing “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, as you can see below.
The massive success of Bieber’s hit “Love Yourself” also no doubt helped catapult the first video to YouTube success. The Canadian hitmaker’s song was the third single from his fourth studio album Purpose. The downtempo soul and pop song was a sassy kiss-off to an ex and it really connected with fans, with the tune becoming Bierber’s third consecutive number one hit in the US and UK.
The song charted in 15 countries and became the seventh highest selling track of 2016 in the US. The tune is also notable for featuring Ed Sheeran as a co-writer. The English megastar had originally written it for his album ÷, and although it didn’t make the cut for that release, luckily for pop fans it got picked up by Bieber.
