You don’t expect a bookshop to burst into a dramatic opera scene when you’re browsing the best-sellers shelf and enjoying the quiet, bookish air.

But that’s exactly what occurred a few weeks ago at Dussmann bookshop on Friedrichstraße in central Berlin, when tenor Jonathan Tetelman came in with an operatic story to tell.Tetelman, dressed in a leather jacket and leaping upon a table, clearly understands how to set the tone and command the room. He quickly started into Puccini’s timeless and famous aria, ‘Nessun dorma’.

Tetelman was joined by the Saxon Wind Philharmonic, whose musicians were stationed around the bookstore, to perform the Puccini epic. Watch it all happen above.

Many consider the Chilean-American vocalist, who is still in his mid-30s, to be one of the next big things in opera.

He was recently characterized as “the sunniest-sounding tenor since Luciano Pavarotti” by the prestigious Gramophone magazine, which is undoubtedly a name any young tenor would desire to be associated with.Tetelman’s new CD, The Great Puccini, is released by the respected record label Deutsche Grammophon. It includes scenes and arias from the Italian composer’s operas La bohème, Tosca, Manon Lescaut, and, of course, Turandot, which features the beautiful aria that thundered through the Berlin book-lovers paradise in the viral moment above.

Tetelman’s future schedule includes a spring season at New York’s most famous opera venue, singing Puccini’s La rondine and Madam Butterfly.

But if you can’t make it to the Metropolitan Opera stalls, perhaps you should spend your time at a nearby bookstore’s nonfiction department. In this day and age of incredible pop-up shows, you never know what to expect…
