The King of rock and roll reaches number one with the album ‘If I Can Dream’, which features orchestral re-workings by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Almost 40 years after his death, the King of rock and roll proves that his reign will always live on.

A collection of Elvis’s classics has topped the album charts in the UK, making him the first ever solo artist to have a number one album in five different decades and the longest chart-topper in UK history.

‘If I Can Dream’ is a collection of the star’s classics featuring orchestral re-workings by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and is his 12th chart-topping album in the UK.

He now has more number one albums in the UK than any other male solo artist, putting him level with Madonna in second place for the most chart-topping LPs, behind the Beatles, who have 15, the Official Charts Company said.

The star’s former wife Priscilla Presley said: “This is an album that Elvis always really wanted to do and he would have been so pleased to know his fans are still there and they continue to love his music.

“The most talented team put this album together and helped us all realise an unfulfilled dream.”

The King’s first number one album was ‘Rock n Roll’ in 1956.

Meanwhile, Rod Stewart clinched his 34th top 10 album with ‘Another Country’ new at number two, and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey is at number three with his first solo release ‘Courting The Squall’.

This week the track has sold 121,000 downloads and notched up 5.78 million streams, giving it a tally of more than 179,00 chart sales.
