Sting had tears in his eyes during the heartfelt performance!

Sting is one of the biggest rock legends of all time and has inspired many people during his long career—including other famous faces in the music industry.

One of his greatest fans is Annie Lennox, a Scottish singer-songwriter most famous for her stints in bands like Eurythmics and The Tourists. The star decided to show her great appreciation for Sting by making a surprise appearance at the Polar Music Prize Banquet 2017. She took to the stage and performed a cover of one of his most memorable songs!

The Polar Music Prize Banquet awards ceremony took place in Stockholm, Sweden, and Sting was in attendance.

He’d been honored as one of the 2017 Laureates. Lennox had hidden in the corridors, avoiding Sting at all costs, to pull off the surprise!

Taking a seat at her piano, Lennox seemed almost shy as she introduced herself and spoke directly across the room to Sting, who was sitting with the audience. We’re hardly surprised—it must be pretty daunting to find yourself in conversation with a rock legend!

Lennox let Sting know just how inspiring he was to her.

She said:

“You know, I’ve been a really sincere fan of your music for decades. This is such a privilege. I love you very, very much, and I love your music even more.”

To the cheers of the crowd, she began to play the opening chords of one of Sting’s greatest hits, “Fragile,” from his Grammy Award-winning album, “Nothing Like The Sun.”

We’re more used to hearing the tune played in a soft rock style, but Lennox turned it around and completely made it her own. She added a haunting darkness to the song, belting out the lyrics with only her piano as accompaniment.

Lennox has a very distinctive sound. She became famous in the seventies for her hits, such as “No More ‘I Love You’s,” and “Why,” two power ballads that best demonstrate her astonishing singing talent.

No one can argue that Lennox’s voice isn’t ideally suited for Sting’s song.

She had the audience listening in rapt silence as she demonstrated her impeccable piano playing skills and vocal abilities. Sting watched the performance attentively and seemed moved by Lennox’s take on his hit. There were tears in his eyes as he stood at the end of the performance, giving Lennox a standing ovation. The audience joined in, cheering and clapping in appreciation.

Ever humble, Lennox stood up from her seat and said into the microphone: “I tried!”

Sting responded by touching a hand to his heart and mouthing, “Thank you.” Lennox wasn’t the only star to honor Sting that night, either. Latin pop-rock musician José Feliciano performed his own acoustic version of “Every Breath You Take” one of the most famous tunes by The Police, and The Tallest Man on Earth took on another of the band’s classics, “Roxanne.”

After all that attention, we’d imagine Sting felt suitably spoiled by the end of the night!

Still, it was well-deserved. Sting is a legend in his own right and has been performing as a musician for nearing 50 years. He has received 17 Grammy Awards and multiple Brit Awards, and in 2002, earned a star on the all-important Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. Phew!

We’re sure Sting was blown away by Lennox’s emotional performance of one of his greatest hits. Watch the video and listen for yourself!
