Ask any country music fan and they would know the legend that is Garth Brooks.
Garth started his singing career back in 1985, and by sheer hard work and determination, received a breakthrough four years later and became a country music icon with some of his best hits like ‘The Thunder Rolls’, ‘Friends in Low Places’, ‘Unanswered Prayers’, and ‘The Dance’.
After over three decades in the entertainment industry, Garth has grown to be one the biggest icons in the history of country music. Back in 2000, however, fans of country music were heartbroken when Garth announced his retirement that fall.
His reason for retiring was to spend more time raising his family. According to Capitol Records, he had already sold more than 100 million records in the U.S. alone by then.
He made a comeback in 2014 when he decided to release his first album in 13 years, ‘Man Against Machine’, and was invited to come on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in early 2015 to talk about his new album and what’s been going on in his personal life.
In 1999, Garth was one of the very first country music stars to declare support behind gay rights, so it’s no wonder Ellen, a prominent LGBTQ+ ally, has so much respect for him.
During the interview, Ellen and Garth spoke candidly and exchanged some jokes before he performed his first song on the show, ‘Ain’t Going Down Til The Sun Comes Up’, a popular hit from his 1993 album ‘In Pieces’.
He then switched things up by performing a more personal and heartfelt song titled ‘Mom’, a song that is about God telling an unborn child about his mother. His simple acoustic melody from his guitar was enough to bring Ellen to tears as she listened to him sing.
The performance was so emotionally raw and moving that the audience, too, had tears streaming down their faces.
