Michael Bublé was blown away when he spontaneously invited fan Richy Brown onstage to sing at his concert and the man slayed it, singing a gorgeous version of “Fly Me to the Moon”. Bublé couldn’t believe his ears and called Brown’s singing “Mariah Carey mixed in with a bit of Frank Sinatra.”
Bublé praised how Brown didn’t just copy the most well-known version of the song by Frank Sinatra, but instead added some jazzy scat singing at the end of his performance, showcasing his unique style. Check out the video below, which has been viewed 4.6 million times.
Before the performance Bublé made it clear that he had never heard Brown sing before, making the bit quite a gamble for the singer, as it was done at his huge concert at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. Luckily Brown pulled it off and sang like a pro, getting praise from Bublé for having the cojones to sing without prep in front of such an enormous crowd.
Bublé really loves to make unplanned interactions with fans like this and often makes it a feature of his concerts. You can see the Canadian traditional pop star invite a 17-year-old fan to sing “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” at another concert below. The teen also hits it out of the park, effortlessly singing the tune, which was another song popularized by Frank Sinatra.
“Fly Me to the Moon” was written in 1954 by American composer Bart Howard and was first recorded later that year by Kaye Ballard. The song was subsequently recorded by many artists and became a jazz standard. The most enduring version is no doubt Sinatra’s recording, which was included on his 1964 album It Might as Well Be Swing, which also featured pianist Count Basie and his orchestra.
The karaoke favourite became closely associated with NASA’s Apollo space program, and the Apollo 10 and 11 astronauts famously played a tape of Sinatra’s version while orbiting the moon and approaching for the first moon landing, respectively.
