Sometimes tragedy can be the fuel that drives us to greatness. A terrible life circumstance can open your eyes to the shortness of life and help spark a new passion that moves you to make the most out of every opportunity you get.

The reason 38-year-old Daniel Evans finally filled out the papers to stand in line to audition for The X Factor is a deeply sad story. His wife Jacqueline used to beg him to try out for The X Factor so he would have a chance to share his voice with the world, but Daniel would shrug it off and ignore her requests.

Unfortunately, after the birth of their baby his wife passed away, leaving Daniel feeling lost. But he knew he wanted to honor her wishes by finally auditioning for the television show.

Daniel was working as a pool cleaner at the time, saying that he was “trying to do whatever he can just to get by.” He stepped into the audition room with judges Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh, and Cheryl Cole.

When he told them why he wanted to win The X Factor, the judges looked at one another in disbelief at the tragic story.

Then Daniel began to sing “Sometimes When We Touch” with his wife obviously in mind. His heart and voice melted the judges, bringing Cheryl Cole to tears. He rejoiced when all three judges said “yes” – the fourth Cole, couldn’t even speak because she was so choked up with emotion. Simon told him that meant he had 4.

His pursuit inspires us to not let time pass us by, but instead, to seize each and every opportunity in front of us.
