When the judges on America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League were faced with choosing the singers they wanted for their team, Heidi Klum quickly chose Enkh-Erdene. Having grown up in rural Mongolia, Enkh-Erdene won Season 2 of Mongolia’s Got Talent, making him a sought-after contestant for the show. When he arrived with his translator to meet Heidi, he admitted that he often felt nervous before performing. She encouraged him to be confident because he had a “star voice”.

For his first performance on the show, Enkh greeted the judges quietly and politely as he took the stage. Then, he began to sing, and jaws in the audience dropped as he started singing a crooning cover of the country song ‘Friends In Low Places’ by Garth Brooks. His confident performance and deep, full baritone voice took both the audience and the other judges by surprise. Howie Mandel was so surprised by his voice that he asked, “Is that coming out of him?”

Howie, amazed by Enkh’s vocals, asked if he was lip-syncing, to which Heidi admonished, “Don’t judge a book by its cover!” Despite being surrounded by traditional Mongolian folk music during his upbringing, Enkh truly fell in love with music when he discovered American country music stars such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. His own success in the genre just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what your background is when it comes to following in the footsteps of those you admire.

Despite Enkh’s lack of presence on social media, he has continued to release new music since his win on Mongolia’s Got Talent in 2016, managing to reach a global audience. He has released music videos on his YouTube channel, with his cover of John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ receiving over 300k views. In 2023, he released his first album ‘Admiral Bayan’. This album showcased his iconic country music style alongside traditional influences from his Mongolian upbringing.

Enkh-Erdene managed to make it all the way to the semi-finals of AGT: Fantasy League, for which he performed a soulful cover of Willie Nelson’s ‘Always On My Mind’. He was met with yet another standing ovation for his performance. Although Enkh didn’t walk away from AGT: Fantasy League with the trophy this time, it is clear from the audience’s enthusiastic reaction that people want to hear more from Enkh-Erdene’s unexpected and impressive vocal talents. With his global appeal and classic country style, Enkh-Erdene may well be on his way to achieving his dream of becoming “a star known worldwide”.
