Speaking on stage following the performance with Ed, Passenger, 39, whose real name is Michael Rosenberg, said: “Well that was a f***ing moment wasn’t it? What a gig.”

Earlier at the concert, where he was joined by other guests Gabrielle Aplin and Nina Nesbitt, he said: “This is one of the most special gigs I’ve ever played.

“It’s been a very emotional thing to make this album again.

“I was a busker for many years, I played in pubs to, at most, 14 people including bar staff.

“I never thought I’d be able to do this for a living and this album changed that.”

Despite Ed talking previously about loving a drink, punters were not allowed to have alcohol in the church due to its religious use.

Ed has had a busy year, having released his hit albums Subtract and Autumn Variations.

He completed the US leg of his Mathematics Tour a fortnight ago and will play special shows in London later this month to celebrate the release of his latest record.

However, he will pick his tour back up in the New Year and it is currently scheduled to last until next September, by which point he will have played 114 shows.

He has promised there is even more new music on the way, teasing the release of a pop record in 2024, as well as a collaborative project with J Balvin.

The Colombian musician, 38, said: “It came about in an organic, natural way.

“We met; we had coffee; we’d run into each other at the same gym, at the hotel.

“That’s going to be another album that will offer a lot to talk about, because it’s like merging two worlds.”
