“Johnny B. Goode” is a classic rock and roll anthem written and performed by the legendary Chuck Berry. It was first released in 1958 and quickly became a hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is about a poor country boy from Louisiana who dreams of becoming a rock and roll star. Just like Laine Hardy, a contestant on American Idol, who gave us this performance.

Chuck Berry was one of the pioneers of rock and roll, and “Johnny B. Goode” was one of his most successful songs. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. So Laine’s performance is a bit of a risk: iconic song routines are often unfavorably compared to the original and the new artist suffers even though they did a reasonably good job.

But here, Laine definitely makes it work. He has the entire crowd on his side and clearly the judges–especially Katy Perry–think he’s does a bang-up job. He gets a standing ovation from the audience and bows from all three judges.

He may not be able to move like Chuck Berry–after all, not many people can–but he sure captivates the American Idol crowd. I think you’re gonna like this one. Watch the full video below and please leave us a Facebook comment to let us know what you thought!
