It’s hard to believe it’s been 18 years since the world met a young, struggling audio engineer named Guy Sebastian.

Back in 2003, Sebastian was just 21 when he woke up early to get in line for the first-ever season of “Australian Idol.” He was a bundle of nerves as he waited for his performance that day, but it turns out, he had nothing to worry about.

He chose to sing “Ribbon in the Sky” by Stevie Wonder, and the moment the three judges heard his voice, they knew he was the person they’d been waiting for all day!

“Head and shoulders, the best voice we’ve heard today,” said judge Ian Dickson. Fellow judge Marcia Hines was visibly moved by Sebastian’s performance, telling him, “What a beautiful gift you have.”

Mark Holden added a third yes, sending Sebastian to the main competition in Sydney, Australia!

The only caveat? Dickson really didn’t like the young singer’s look. “However, you look crap so you’ll have to work on that!” he said with a laugh.

Incredibly, this humble young man who started singing in his church choir at age 14 went on to win the whole show! Afterward, he enjoyed a lot of fame for being the first winner of “Australian Idol,” landing a record deal and seeing his first single debut reach the very top of the Australian charts. His first album, “Just As I Am,” went platinum six times!

He continued to put out records for the next decade, offering unique sounds ranging from R&B to 1960s Southern soul. He also ventured back into the world of live talent shows, taking on the role of a judge for “The X Factor Australia.”

Sebastian has released even more original music over the past few years, and in 2018, he joined Boy George, Kelly Rowland, and Delta Goodrem as a judge on “The Voice Australia.” Can you believe how far this talented man has come since his first audition? What a remarkable career!
