Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Simon Cowell has changed the face of music and TV over the last 20 years. His X Factor, Idol and Got Talent shows have made a plethora of stars around the world and have launched the careers of hundreds. In his earlier years Simon was seen as a curmudgeon, a “hard case,” who a lot of people thought enjoyed giving bad reviews to contestants. Over the years he has visibly mellowed somewhat but he is still, to put it nicely, “not liked” by a lot of people.

But there is absolutely no assailing his ability to improve a contestant’s performance. This video is the perfect example. 15-year-old Britain’s Got Talent contestant Morgan Smith announces she’ll be singing Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight,” and as soon as she starts it’s clear it will be a lackluster performance. So Simon steps into action.

He stops her performance and asks for something else. After a few words of encouragement from one of the other judges, Simon tells her “Now you’ve heard a little bit of advice, why don’t we turn this into a Morgan Smith concert.”

Morgan launches into “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James and it was a completely different audition. Morgan impressed the judges with her song while the audience sang along: it was clear that she was proving her potential not just to the crowd but even to herself with this performance.
