Amy Grant is nearing the two-year anniversary of her traumatic bike accident in July of 2022 that left her hospitalized and forced to cancel several shows. Now, she’s sharing an update on her ongoing recovery and reveals the surprising “gift” that came from her five-hour surgery at the time.
Lasting Effects With Her Memory And Her Balance
In an exclusive interview with E! News, the Gospel Music Hall of Famer admitted she still has a few lingering issues as a result of the incident that has affected things like her short-term memory as well as her balance.
“I made a joke about it last night, sometimes I’ll walk around like I’m drunk and you just have to laugh about all of it. And I can’t remember what I can’t remember,” she told the outlet.
Grant also shared a bit of hesitancy towards getting back on a bike. This isn’t too surprising considering how she sustained cuts, lacerations, and bruises and was “knocked unconscious for 10 or 15 minutes,” according to her husband Vince Gill.
“I don’t know if I’ll get back on a bike. There’s so many great sports to enjoy, and so I don’t know. I mean, who knows,” she added.
Grant Receives An Unexpected Facelift
As a result of the accident, Grant also learned that she had a cyst growing in her throat. She revealed that the trauma of the wreck forced the cyst to go into “hypergrowth” and in order to remove it, she had to undergo an extensive five-hour surgery. One of the biggest downsides of having a procedure done to her throat was having to relearn how to sing again, however, there was one unexpected upside that came from this situation.
Grant explained that the doctors asked if she wanted a facelift while she was under, to which she responded, “Dear God, no. I actually have to be on stage in X number of weeks.”
She continued, “I didn’t ask for it, but I came out of surgery and my neck was a little tighter and I just felt like an old beat-up car that went in and got a paint job and had the dents knocked out…That’s a gift.”
Two Major Surgeries Within Two Years
Amy Grant was riding her bike in Nashville near the Harpeth Hills Golf Course on July 27, 2022 when her accident occurred. She was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time, however, she still managed to sustain enough injuries to need to be transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
This news came just two years after Grant underwent open heart surgery, which her rep previously told PEOPLE was necessary “to correct a condition from birth the doctors discovered during a heart checkup called PAPVR.”
Amy Grant has proved time and time again that she has incredible resilience when faced with great challenges. Even though a few underlying issues still remain from her bike accident, it’s clear that she is making strides and isn’t letting anything get in the way of continuing her music career.
Bringing Her Resilience And Talent Back To The Stage
The six-time GRAMMY award winner launched her 2024 spring tour on February 16 with a show at the Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque, NM. She made it a point to tell E! News that her reason for getting back out on the road comes from her need to be creative and share that passion with her audience.
“My reasons for touring are, I don’t get on stage because I need to hear applause. I have always loved creating spaces, and I do think that it feels like that continues to matter,” she shared.
Amy Grant has a slew of tour dates scheduled through November. Her next performances will take place on Tuesday (Feb. 27) at the Elsinore Theatre in Salem, OR.
In a recent post, her team shared that those planning to attend any of her shows throughout the year can expect “Lots of surprises and new things this round.”
