What happens when you put a world-renowned British superstar, and some of the funniest members of the American entertainment circle onto one show? A mildly confusing, but hilarious, comedy skit that leaves more questions than answers. Despite its randomness, it left many Americans, and people from all around the world, in fits of laughter.

This is exactly what happened on one of the Saturday Night Live episodes in 2020, where an uncanny collective of artists gathered to perform a skit based on the romantic reality TV series, The Bachelor. Amongst the stars were British pop sensation Adele, the comedienne Heidi Gardner, Chloe Fineman, and Lauren Holt. All four ladies were ‘competing’ for the love of Beck Bennett, and you can see the comedy for yourself in the video below:

In the skit, “Ben K” (Beck Bennett) declares his desire to pursue love, and it’s up to the four women to show off their talents and personalities to earn his heart. It’s a direct parody of the Bachelor TV show and also centers around parodying Adele herself. Adele plays herself in the skit, but humorously jests about herself, with her ongoing ‘bit’ in the sketch being that she bursts into song at any opportunity.

Adele is a powerhouse of the music industry and has been a bastion of British pop culture since her triumphant burst onto the scene in 2008. Despite leaving the BRIT school just two years prior, Adele released her debut, 19, in 2008 and subsequently one of her biggest hits, “Chasing Pavements”. This song showcased her natural vocal talent and complex song structures which would define her musicianship throughout her career. Listen to her exhilarating debut in the video below:

Saturday Night Live has been a staple of easygoing American entertainment for decades. However, this wasn’t always the case. The first season of SNL, which aired in 1975, was not a success and relied on its “Not Ready For Prime Time Players” segment to bring the viewers in. Eventually, however, sketch comedy began to kick off in the US, and from that point on SNL experienced a burst in viewership and a steady increase in audience loyalty.

SNL has changed a lot over the years and has always kept up with the most current news and developments in the entertainment industry. Each episode is hosted by a different celebrity, with some recurring more than others, and usually at a point where they have a new piece of media out to the public. This helps keep the show fresh and as relevant as possible, while also being as entertaining as can be.

On Adele’s Bachelorette episode of SNL, there was no stopping the jokes about her tendency to burst into song whenever possible. While another contestant and “Ben K” were having an intimate moment on the show, after the contestant told Adele to go away, Ben K then remarked that Adele had never left and was hiding in a bush watching them. The sketch then turns into Adele performing a parody of her iconic track “Hello”, replacing her lyrics with “Hello from inside this bush”.

Adele sent her fans wild as she returned to Saturday Night Live to host this week’s show, 12 years after she made her debut as a musical guest.

Excited viewers flooded Twitter with praise for the powerhouse, 32, as they hailed her a ‘comedy legend’ and tipped her to win an Emmy award for poking fun at her seven-stone weight loss on the variety series, which saw her open the programme by joking that she brought ‘half of me’.

The micro-blogging site also exploded with cheeky posts demanding the singer to release her hotly-anticipated fourth studio album after she admitted she hadn’t finished her project and would rather ‘have a glass of wine or six and see what happens’.

Kicking off the show with a bang, the Hello hitmaker immediately referenced her slimmed-down appearance by stating: ‘I know I look different than when you last saw me, but because of the COVID restrictions I had to travel light and bring only half with me, so this is the half I chose.’

Social media users commented on her new look – which has reportedly been a result of following a 1,000 calorie a day diet and upping her exercise – as they wrote: ‘Adele really said “New body, who dis?”

‘snl might be over but i will never stop talking about how much adele SERVED tonight. Tbh, i still cant accept this slim version of Adele.

‘I will take any opportunity to celebrate Adele; I just hope we reserve the same obsessive enthusiasm for her new music as we do her weight loss. #AdeleOnSNL.

Adele – who has been nominated for both Daytime and Primtime Emmys for musical performances in 2016 – caused Twitter users to pen: ‘She is coming for the EMMY of Best Actress in Comedy Series. ADELE ON SNL.

Meanwhile, a confused social media user questioned: ‘Guys, it’s starting to sink in that the moment is over and we’d have to wait again for miss maam Adele. The album is not finished. Maybe early next year? Is she lying or did we clown really hard we’re having a hard time differentiating reality from fantasy?’ (sic)

Others focused their attention on counting down the days until she releases new music, five years after she dropped her third album 25.

They said: ‘Adele new album coming for blood and to end everyone’s career ! Adele just remind everyone why she has 15 Grammys and is a icon.’ (sic)

Adele was last on SNL in 2008, in an episode hosted by Josh Brolin. At the time she had just released her first album, 19.

‘It’s me, Adele, and my God, I’m absolutely thrilled to finally be hosting this show,’ she said. ‘A show that not only do I genuinely love, but the show that broke my career here in America 12 very long years ago.

‘See, I was a musical guest back in 2008 when Sarah Palin came on with Ms Tina Fey. So obviously a few million people tuned in to watch it and the rest is history.

‘Now, I don’t know anything about American politics. I’m British, you know? And I don’t want to say anything too political, so I’ll just say this: Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything, yeah?’ She also joked about her British habit of swearing, gesturing to a swear jar.

‘I’m nervous. You know what I’m like. I always get very nervous on live TV but tonight especially so because I swear a lot. Like a lot a lot,’ she said.

‘Honestly I don’t notice I’m doing it anymore. But tonight, we’ve got a swear jar. Let’s check in on that. Let’s make sure that all goes to charity.’
