Yamaha released the newest iteration of its Silent Bass, the SLB300, earlier this year. Much of its makeup is familiar—a maple neck, body of spruce and mahogany, rosewood fingerboard, ebony tailpiece, maple bridge, and a piezo pickup. It is in sound production that Yamaha has particularly invested its energies, providing the SLB300 with what the company is calling the SRT-powered system, which adds simulated body resonance characteristic of acoustic basses to the pickup’s signal output. The SRT-powered system then gives players the option of switching between the simulated responses of three different types of studio microphones, and EQ and blend controls to dial in their sound. Pickup and preamp are preinstalled, and the instrument—which weighs in at 15 lbs, 14 oz—comes with a soft case.
